Strategic Planning Retreats and Ongoing Workshops

Essential Piece #2: A Blueprint for Organizational Planning
and Execution

The Strategic Planning Retreat is designed to guide Senior Executive Teams through
a process of creating and implementing a purpose driven plan. This will move the
organization toward a shared destiny.
You cannot order change, like you order a pizza.

The Synergy Approach
The difference between Traditional Strategic Planning and Synergy Strategic Planning is within the depth and breadth of the managerial leadership focus. In Traditional Strategic Planning, the process is completed at the top by the executive team. It is then committed to writing and, in some cases, word-smithed by an advertising agency and then distributed down into the organization with orders to make the change happen.
In the Synergy Strategic Planning Model, the core principle is that organizational effectiveness is achieved through committed leaders who see the organization as a whole, and that change happens quickly through empowered individuals working in teams toward a shared destiny. The Synergy approach to strategic planning is a blueprint for organizational planning and execution and comprises four important steps:

        • Step 1: Creating an internal mission statement.
        • Step 2: The completion of a SWOT analysis.
        • Step 3: Determining the execution essentials.
        • Step 4: What gets measured gets done.

A good strategic plan focuses on integrating people, systems, and structure, thus directing them toward a predetermined, worthwhile vision—a clear set of believable and livable values—and Transformational, Exciting, Authentic, Measurable (TEAM) goals.
The Vision needs to be exciting, challenging, and believable. It needs to build a clear picture of what shared success looks like down the road.
The Values need to be virtuous, such as building relationship trust through personal and professional respect, delivering quality products, and embracing service to one another as well as the customer.
The Goal should focus on achieving the vision, increasing profitability, productivity, and performance with specific and measurable sub-goals.

“Visionary companies attained their stature not because they made visionary pronouncements, but because they succeeded in having their core values and purpose permeate the entire organization” - Jim Collins and Jerry Porras.

The single constant to business success, is good leadership - the art of shifting mind-sets, inspiring passion and delivering results.” - Chris Alexander

“Real wealth is knowing
how to direct energy.
Buckminster Fuller

Systems, Structure, and Functions

A key ingredient for a strategic plan to work is to ensure that systems, job functions, and structure support the vision, values, and goals. Working as a high-performance team and exceeding customer expectations can die very quickly if dictatorial leadership and outdated policies and procedures block positive energy. Of course, all systems, structure, and functions cannot be changed overnight,  which is why the Synergy Formula supports the principle of continuous improvement. Thousands of small changes made over time will transform a low-performing outfit into a world-class organization—of that, there is no doubt.

Dreams are always more powerful than the impossible!

 Management Commitment

A steady, consistent commitment and guiding hand is the final component of a successful strategic plan. That means: attending meetings, living the values, embracing the vision, being accountable, and delivering on the goals. By so doing, a leadership magnetism takes hold and energy and effort become authentic and trustworthy. More simply put: Anyone would like to work for a purpose-driven, trustworthy leader who walks the talk.

Synergy Business Consulting

Market Re-Positioning

The Synergy approach to Market Repositioning focuses on understanding how to successfully identify what markets truly fit the client’s business in today’s economic climate, what mistakes to avoid and what changes need to be made in order to re-position the company for that new marketing charge. Once this direction is identified, Synergy develops a specific Sales Training program to effectively implement this change in market position. This process will define where they want to go and will play a significant role in the development of new business plan.

In this approach, we look at:

  • Current and future assessment of the market
  • Services and products
  • Target clients, business partners and geographic expansion/contraction
  • Marketing materials and use
  • Developing the right marketing leadership

Business Plan Development

The Synergy approach to Business Plan Development takes the essence of the Strategic Planning and Market Repositioning processes and logically follows them through a more comprehensive analysis to further define and assess the business and the opportunities.  Additionally, we focus on developing, implementing, monitoring and measuring the technical goals and objectives along with their associated Action Plan. Once the plan is developed and written, it will be the roadmap on how to get there.

In this approach, we add the “how to” to the Strategic Planning and Market Reposition effort through a series of steps that:

  • Identify the most critical business priorities
  • Develop implementing strategies for staff and management
  • Create an Action Plan with metrics to monitor and measure results

The Action Plan essentially leads us to identify how we capitalize on the company strengths, overcome the weaknesses, take advantage of the opportunities, neutralize the threats and develop the strategies to be effective in delivering on the business plan.

Organizational Assessment

The Synergy approach to Organizational Assessment combines the talents of the Synergy business partners in taking an internalized view of the structure of the clients business and identifying where to make culture changes in the Social and Technical Architecture of that business.  Synergy utilizes the process of creating a diagrammatic visualization that will uniquely define the structure of the independent parts of the organization and how and where they integrate into the greater company team.

In this approach, we help identify, assess and communicate the components of an improved company structure through:

  • Detailed definition of the business units through their respective leaders
  • Development of an integrated model of the entire organization
  • Company-wide communication and implementation

What gets measured gets done.

Systems & Process Improvement

The Synergy approach to Systems and Process Improvement further analyzes the social and technical architecture of the business and implements the steps that we have taken each organization through.  In order to take the fear out of culture change, Synergy will help the company monitor the integration, provide guidance and, as necessary, recommend specific re-tooling programs for the Systems and Process Improvement.  This approach, utilizing various methods of employee, management and client satisfaction surveys, will measure the progress and ultimately the success of this program.

In this approach, we wrap up the process through Systems and Process Improvements to finalize and fine tune the efforts in the areas of:

  • Re-tooling programs for the people and operations that define the social and technical architecture of the company
  • Monitoring the change with personal attention to employee, management and client relationships
  • Measuring and reporting the progress made with independent satisfaction surveys

These Synergy Business Consulting steps provide the opportunity to create a new vision, emphasis, direction, change, and improvement in a company’s overall performance that will be as engaging to the employee and refreshing to management, as it will be satisfying to the client.
